Texas Cold Snap: Prepare Your Home for Potential Storms This Weekend
Last updated: September 24, 2026
Texas residents are bracing for a significant weather shift as a cold front is set to sweep across the state this weekend, bringing with it the threat of storms. The mysanantonio.com reports that this incoming weather pattern could lead to a range of atmospheric disturbances, prompting a need for preparedness. With the possibility of severe weather, it’s a good time to take a proactive approach to your home's comfort and safety. One of the most crucial aspects to consider is your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Unexpected temperature drops and high winds associated with storms can put a strain on these units. Before the weather truly takes hold, consider a quick visual inspection of your outdoor HVAC unit. Ensure there are no loose debris or branches that could be blown into it by strong winds. Clearing the area around your unit can prevent potential damage and ensure it can operate as efficiently as possible. Inside, it’s also wise to test your heating system. Even if temperatures haven't plummeted yet, confirming your furnace or heat pump is working correctly now can save you from a cold surprise if the power flickers or the system struggles with the sudden temperature change. A functioning heating system is paramount when cold air arrives unexpectedly. Beyond your HVAC, ensure your home is sealed against the elements. Check for drafts around windows and doors. While this may seem like a simple step, preventing cold air from seeping in can significantly improve indoor comfort and reduce the workload on your heating system. For those in the Los Angeles, California area, while the current forecast is for Texas, it’s always a prudent idea to stay aware of local weather patterns.
